“Invisible Toy Giant” McDonald’s Japan Pushes Doraemon STEM Toys

Foreword

McDonald’s first introduced the Happy Meal in 1979, with a toy that came with the meal. For decades, this strategy has made McDonald’s millions — it sells 1.5 billion toys a year and has even been dubbed the “invisible toy giant” and “the world’s largest toy distributor” by the media.

McDonald’s Happy Meals launched its Doraemon Happy Free Study toy series in Japan on August 5. In the tradition of McDonald’s “IP Harvester,” the toy is inspired by the popular Japanese IP “Doraemon,” but it’s also unique in that it’s infused with STEM.
