Source of inspiration
The flamingo, or stork. With its graceful long neck, charming long legs and pink plumage, it is a typical bird. Flamingos get their name from their flame-like plumage. Their bright color comes from carotenoids in their diet. Baby flamingos' feathers are white when they are born, then gradually turn gray, and it takes three years to become pink. Flamingos may turn grayish white or be eaten orange if carotenoids are not enough in their diet.When not walking, flamingos often stand on one leg. Scientists think this reduces the amount of water in the legs and prevents heat loss. Many people wonder if flamingos prefer to stand on one leg, the way we tend to use our left or right hands. But scientists have observed that flamingos often alternate between left and right legs, with no particular preference, possibly to keep one leg from getting too cold.But other studies have suggested that by standing on one leg, flamingos allow one half of their brain to "sleep" for a while, while the other half remains balanced and alert. If so, one half of their brain subconsciously shrinks its legs when it wants to sleep.
Whatever the reason, flamingos are masters of balance. It's okay to stand on one leg for hours, even when the wind is blowing. Their special muscles and ligaments make standing on one leg effortless.
